RUSTY JABBZ NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 2011 ISSUE 5

40 ACRES AND A MULE FILMWORKS PRESENTS "BROOKLYN LOVES MICHAEL JACKSON"

Looking forward to an wonderful, Saturday afternoon in the Fort Greene/ Bed Stuy area. I'm on my way to the Spike Lee Joint. The forgotten store, well at least to me. I had no idea, this establishment still existed at least to me. Until, earlier this week I received an email in regards to a Michael Jackson Birthday Tribute.

At first, I was disturbed by the email. Considering the fact its two months late and now they decided to continue the rain date of the Michael Jackson Tribute Celebration. Originally, it was scheduled to take place in Prospect Park, back on Saturday, August 27th. Due to heavy rain conditions and the prequel to Hurricane Irene, the Michael Jackson Tribute was cancelled.

I was looking forward too attending the celebration back in August but it didn't matter. During the summer months, I was employed with the Prospect Park Alliance. Our unit contributed in the official park set up in the Nethermead section of Prospect Park. Where the Michael Jackson Tribute was scheduled to take place. Although it may have rained and the celebration needed to be cancelled. All that mattered to me is that I still got paid for the hard work I put in regardless of the cancellation.

Today is a new day. I would like to thank, Spike Lee for continuing the Michael Jackson legacy this afternoon. I hope everyone will enjoy my article as much as I will enjoy today's party. This is only the beginning though, later on this evening we'll be taking a walk down Fulton Street towards Marcy Avenue to visit the Restoration Rock Festival. You don't want to miss this evening's performance. Technically, its this afternoon's performance. Taking place today at the Restoration Rock Festival, performances by The Brooklyn Philharmonic, Mos Def, Pharoahe Monch, Talib Kweli, Res, Farrah Burns, Homeboy Sandman, Fresh Daily, Joel Ortiz to name a few. Sounds awesome, I can't wait.

I must be one of the most horrible black person in New York City. Thirty-Six years, I've lived in Brooklyn, never did I visit the Spike Lee Joint until today. However, there were occasions where I walked passed this neighborhood block numerous times. There were times when I held gigs at the Five Spot Supper Club, god knows how long I've spun there. Many of those times I would need to pass St. Elliott Place to walk towards Myrtle and not realizing that Spike Lee's Joint is located on this block. Here's another funny thing, Spike Lee's Joint is diagonally, right across the street from Frank's Lounge on Fulton Street. I've been there on several occasions on behalf of, a friend of mine Dj Infinite. It may seem as though I'm making a big deal out of this but in actuality. Spike Lee was one of the and still is the greatest African-American filmmaker of all time. Sure there are other, African-American filmmakers I do not deny their success, talent or fame. I've been a highly decorated, Spike Lee fan since "She Got To Have It". I just don't understand, why I never took it upon myself to ever visit his store. I always knew where the store was located in the Fort Greene area. I do not have an legitimate reason for that its something I must live with, in myself.

I would like to thank, Spike Lee and the staff of 40 Acres and a Mule for making this afternoon happen. It was such an blessing and an honor not only seeing and meeting the Brooklyn iconic but the iconic filmmaker as well.

RESTORATION ROCKS MUSIC FESTIVAL 2011 Saturday, Oct. 8th
I love, Spike Lee and I really enjoyed the afternoon. over here. It's time for me to leave now, I need to head down to The Stuy for the Restoration Rock Festival. I'm uncertain if I'm going to make it. I spent an awful lot of time at, Spike Lee's Joint. I hope, I'll catch some performances on stage.

I arrived, at the scene Joel Ortiz on stage... the Brooklyn Borough Rap President holding it down getting B. K. funkitified. I didn't expect, Joel Ortiz to be the final act of the day. Oh well, one video footage is better than no video footage.

Despite me missing a good, 95 % of the performances that went on here this afternoon. I'm impressed with the flooded crowd on a Fulton St, block in October. Although its not chilly today the sun is out in the sky. Vendors on the sidewalk, moving product it still feels like an Summer deja vu so to speak.
All in All, what a great day in B. K. "FORT GREENE, BED STUY STAND UP!!!" "SPIKE LEE, 40 ACRES STAND UP!!!" "RESTORATION ROCK FESTIVAL STAND UP!!!"
